Rock of Ages
Augustus M. Toplady, 1740-1778

Rock of Ages, cleft for me,
let me hide myself in thee;
let the water and the blood,
from thy wounded side which flowed,
be of sin the double cure;
save from wrath and make me pure.

Not the labors of my hands
can fulfill thy law’s commands;
could my zeal no respite know,
could my tears forever flow,
all for sin could not atone;
thou must save, and thou alone.

Nothing in my hand I bring,
simply to the cross I cling;
naked, come to thee for dress;
helpless, look to thee for grace;
foul, I to the fountain fly;
wash me, Savior, or I die.

While I draw this fleeting breath,
when mine eyes shall close in death,
when I soar to worlds unknown,
see thee on thy judgment throne,
Rock of Ages, cleft for me,
let me hide myself in thee.

    I need to find stuff like this in CD form. I keep buying stuff at the christian bookstore and getting disapointed. (If its not life, its regular contemporary or something. But most of the hymns I find are live or artists I’m not crazy about. Anyway, this is a great God-glorifying hymn. I love it.

    Sarah,

    Many more hymns are available, even some in ways we haven’t heard before. Theologically and doctrinally sound, some now remain the same lyrically and musically, some retain the lyrics with new music being written and some are completely new modern-day hymns.

    You might like some of the music being produced by these ministries. They all have samples and cds!

    Indelible Grace Music – for the most part they are retaining the lyrics and writing new music. Have you ever watched John Piper’s video, “Why is There Evil in the World?” The background music is a hymn with lyrics written in 1745 called, “Guide Me Oh Thou Great Jehovah” and is sung by Jeremy Casella. Another beautiful hymn here is called, “Who is This So Weak and Helpless,” and was written in 1867. Both are on an excellent cd called, “Beams of Heaven.”

    Sovereign Grace Music – this includes Sovereign Grace Music, Nap Records, and Overflow Series. They write most of their own music. The New Attitude Band, who leads worship at the New Attitude conferences, is under Nap Records and their cd is called, “Looked Upon” or Lu. It’s not all hymns but lyrically, a great cd!

    Getty Music – sometimes teaming up with Stuart Townend, they are writing modern hymns, such as “The Power of the Cross,” “In Christ Alone” and many others.

    There couldn’t have been a better time than now for me to find this song. I’ve had some rough days the last few weeks. Escpecially because my obedience to the Lord, seemed to make the world around me fall apart. But last Saturday, my Saviour came to the rescue. And this song was part of his way of braking my hart. “Thou must save, and Thou alone” Amen. His Will be done, His kingdomn come!

    Thanks for posting!
