If you regularly attend a youth group it’s more than likely you’ve heard of Rob Bell before. Maybe you’ve seen his popular NOOMA videos or read some of his books – or at least know of someone who has. I’ve heard quite a few people speak well of one book in particular, called, “Velvet Elvis: Repainting the Christian Faith.”
On the back cover of this book, Bell writes, “We have to test everything… Test it. Probe it. Do that to this book.” And so, I hope and encourage anyone who is familiar with Rob Bell – especially those who have read this book – to take the time to read this following review written by Mark Sohmer – testing the teachings of Rob Bell, with the teachings of the Scriptures, just as he has encouraged us to do.
Sohmer goes into great detail explaining a number of dangerous heretical errors found throughout “Velvet Elvis.” Errors such as: a wrong view of the Trinity, a wrong view of the exclusivity of Christianity, a wrong view of the state of mankind, a wrong gospel, a wrong view of Jesus’ purpose, and more. The fact that this book is so popular just goes to show either how subtle error can be, or how ignorant the youth are. Or maybe a little bit of both…

This guy seems to be making quite a name for himself among the evangelicals, eh?
Hi Stubo,
Are you referring to Rob Bell? He is, unfortunately. Another good post to view is this.
Yeah, Rob Bell. I saw that critique when it was posted. Good to see a fellow Aussie on this site getting some attention!
I hate this. Seriously. Why is it the false teachers get the most acceptance? I suppose I shouldn’t expect anything else because the Bible clearly sets up the precedence for this kind of stuff, but what saddens me is that the young Christians go along with this and follow this man over the word of God.
I just watched a video on Youtube of these two brave people standing outside one of Bell’s talks warning against his false teachings. People were just walking past, one person got up and mocked the talkers and people were yelling things out from the crowd. These men were quoting Jesus and God, and yet people wouldn’t have a bar of it.
Why must humans be so stubborn?
“But there were also false prophets among the people, just as there will be false teachers among you. They will secretly introduce destructive heresies, even denying the sovereign Lord who bought them–brining swift destruction on themselves. Many will follow their shameful ways and will bring the way of truth into disrepute. In their greed these teachers will exploit you with stories they have made up. Their condemnation has long been hanging over them, and their destruction has not been sleeping.” (2 Peter 1:1-3)
Jesus said, “Woe to you, when all men speak well of you, for so their fathers did to the false prophets.” (Luke 6:26) The reason false teachers are so accepted is because not everyone who claims to be a Christian actually is one. In fact, Jesus said the majority of them aren’t (Matthew 7:13,21)! False teachers attract the false converts. That then creates the necessary division, which helps the fake and the genuine be recognized (1 Corinthians 11:19). Jesus also said that people run away from the truth because they hate God, and love their evil deeds (John 3:19). So it is really what should be expected… They err because they know neither the Scriptures or the power of God (Mark 12:24).
